Another significant advantage of remapping is a decrease in fuel consumption. When accelerating and maintaining constant speeds, the extra torque at the bottom of the rev range needs less throttle input. When driving while fully laden, towing, or driving over elevation changes, the vehicle can also be driven in a higher gear at slower speeds, lowering rpm.

Of course, the obvious question is, "Why don't carmakers fine-tune their own ECUs?" On the other hand, large manufacturers sell vehicles in a variety of markets with varying temperatures, tax/emission restrictions, and fuel quality. They must consider all of these elements and, as a result, must make significant concessions in their tuning setup.
